Speak Up! Speak Out! | The Breath Project Pt. 2

After the murder of George Floyd last year, Gamal Chasten and Marieke Gaboury launched The Breath Project in partnership with theatres around the US including San Diego REP. The goal of the Breath Project is to build a more equitable theater community in this country, and actively dismantle structural racism in the American Theater, through a combination of art, action, and advocacy.
For the inaugural Breath Project Festival in Fall 2020, artists of color were asked to submit world premiere works that were 8 minutes and 46 seconds in length. All the Festival performance selections are now available to stream online. Over the coming months, The REP will share those we found particularly moving.

The Ballad of the Dying Body or The Breath To Say.

Artist's Project Description: I wrote the piece after thinking about the medical definition of hypoxia and the journey that the body experiences when oxygen leaves for good. I then called a few friends that I've worked with before to film the piece.

Artist's Bio: Derek Snow has been active in the Cincinnati theatre community as an actor, writer and director for over 35 years. A graduate of the School for Creative and Performing Arts, Derek then continued his education in NYC before returning after graduation to teach inner-city youth dramatic arts in the public school system. He has been with the popular physical theatre group Performance Gallery for the past 18 years. His written work has been produced in Atlanta, New Jersey and Sydney, Australia. He recently had his latest short play, "Wind Kill Factor", read for a sold-out audience at Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, and created his own entity, Missing Front Plate Productions to address the lack of BIPOC work in theatres nationwide.
