Education Programs

The REP offers education programming for theatre lovers of all ages. Our Project Discovery Student play series hosts over 1,000 students from underserved schools. Our signature Surround Events provide over 70 free pre-show events at the Lyceum for people of all ages. Our Fellowship program supports 15 young theatre professionals in a nine-month intensive professional theatre work experience program.

Fellows Program

The REP recruits 15 college and professional level artisans, who have chosen the theatre for a career, to receive hands-on experience and training in scenery construction, costume design and construction, lighting design, sound design, stage management, and properties for nine months each year.

Engagement Events

Engagement Events -every production hosts free pre-and post-show events free and open to the public, that play off themes from the show, highlight artists and initiate conversation. We annually facilitate 65 Engagement Events and 12 gallery shows that serve 1700 people with free access to San Diego art and culture.

Project Discovery

Program provides curriculum and access to live theatre for at least 1000 students throughout San Diego County with an emphasis on underserved and hard-to-reach audiences. Teachers and students receive study guides meeting California Department of Education's Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) standards.

Project Discovery is also supported in part by the Pratt Memorial Fund and the Samuel I. and John Henry Fox Foundation.

Internships

San Diego Repertory Theatre Internships offer professional experience opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students throughout the calendar and academic year. Internships are available in all departments by request. Internships are on an as-needed basis and are offered annually. These internships are unpaid learning opportunities and typically last 3 months. Internships are designed to provide students professional development opportunities working within our artistic and production areas. Interns will work with a SD Rep staff member and receive mentorship in their respective discipline. Internships may fulfill academic requirements, which would be determined by the respective applicant’s academic institution if applicable. Prior theatre experience, while helpful, is not required.

Please submit a cover letter detailing your specific interests and qualifications, a resume and one letter of recommendation and your availability to kheil@sdrep.org.  Visit our opportunities page for a listing of current internships.

Testimonials from former interns:

Interning at San Diego REP was an invaluable experience for assisting with literary management duties. From researching material, creating study guides, and commenting on cold submitted plays, the work was always practical and engaging." – Erica Paulson (former intern)

At any one time, the REP has several young interns working in their Development, Marketing, Production, and Artistic departments. When I approached the REP for an internship, they designed a cross-departmental experience that would be most fulfilling for me. This personalized touch indicated a care and hospitality at the REP's core. It has been my pleasure and good fortune to work here—a fantastic introduction to professional theatre.” – Kayla Cohen  (former intern)

As Literary Intern, I honed valuable skills in writing and research that I continue to utilize in my future experiences. This internship prepared me for subsequent work with The Old Globe and also the San Diego REP as Assistant Director on My Manana Comes.” – Zane Alcorn  (former intern)

The internship in the Literary Department was one of the most valuable experiences I had during my work on my M.A. in Theatre Arts at San Diego State University. I had opportunities to research and develop audience engagement materials for current productions at the REP and make real contributions toward the development of the REP’s upcoming seasons. The whole team at this top San Diego theatre were fantastic. I was treated like an equal collaborator, a real member of the artistic team.” – Joel Castellaw (former intern)
