San Diego Repertory Theatre Announces
New Board of Trustees Slate
SAN DIEGO – Feb. 11, 2016 – San Diego REPertory Theatre (San Diego REP), Downtown San Diego’s Resident Professional Theatre, has appointed Y. Sachiko Kohatsu as its new President of the Board of Trustees, increasing her role in the organization where she was previously Board Vice President. Filling her vacancy as Vice President is recent Board of Trustees addition, Marilyn Haring. The organization has also elected John R. Padilla as Board Secretary and added Doug Friedman as a new trustee. Dawn Moore will continue her involvement with the Board of Trustees as Immediate Past President.
“Our Board of Trustees truly reflects The REP’s mission to represent and celebrate the multiple voices of our region. The Board now represents many different ethnic, religious, cultural and political backgrounds,” says The REP’s Managing Director Larry Alldredge of the current board that represents the Latino, Jewish, LGBTQ, Indian and Japanese communities, as well as both sides of the political aisle. “A board this diverse is not only unique locally, but is rare amongst regional theatres nationwide.”
“It has been a pleasure to shadow Dawn Moore (immediate past president) for the past year, learning about The REP from her great institutional knowledge,” states Sachiko Kohatsu, Board President. “I am so very grateful for this opportunity and I look forward to working with this diverse and energized Board of Trustees. It is an exciting time to be president as the Board is hard at work strategically planning for The REP’s future.”
“I have been honored to lead The REP’s Board of Trustees these past 4 ½ years,” says Dawn Moore, Immediate Past President. “Since The REP’s founding 40 years ago, so many volunteers have contributed to the success of The REP by serving on the Board, each bringing their unique voice and curious soul to the tasks at hand. It is with great excitement that I transition leadership to a very capable and diverse set of new board officers to lead The REP into its next decade.”
Y. Sachiko Kohatsu has been a member of The REP Board since June 2013, and previously served as Vice President. She was elected Board President on January 19, 2016. . Recently retired after 15 years, Sachiko worked in San Diego County government as a Policy Aide in Land Use and the Environment on the staffs of former Supervisor Pam Slater-Price and Pam’s successor, Supervisor Dave Roberts. Prior to that, she worked in both the private sector and public sector as an Environmental Planner and Project Manager. For 10 years (1990 – 2000), she served on the Board of the San Diego Chapter of the Association of Environmental Professionals as Treasurer, President, and Chapter Director. For her AEP work, she was honored for her Outstanding Contribution to the Environmental Profession in 2003. She has attended San Diego REP productions since the early 1980s and became a subscriber in 1987.
Marilyn Haring, Ph.D has served as officer and member of several boards of trustees across the country and offers her skills in strategic planning, research and policy, organizational development, and enhancing diversity through her egalitarian model and practice of mentoring. Her academic career included deanships at the University of North Carolina/Greensboro, University of Massachusetts/Amherst, and Purdue University. She is Professor Emerita of Educational Studies at Purdue University. She is a longtime supporter of the arts, having moved to Ontario, Canada, in early 2000 in order to be in walking distance to the theaters of the Shaw Festival. After retiring to Santa Fe, NM, Marilyn and her spouse Kathy spent several winters enjoying the lively cultural milieu of San Diego, especially the work of The REP, which mirrors their progressive values of passionate inclusivity.
John R. Padilla is CEO/Principal of John Padilla Plumbing Heating & Air, Inc. where he is a partner with his son CFO/Principal Johnnie Padilla for the last four years with great success. John is a veteran of the U.S.A.F. where he received his training as a plumber and has helped build several plumbing companies in the San Diego area before opening his own. He also is a professional actor where he has acted in several plays at the San Diego REP as well as other theaters in San Diego. He is a producer of Amigos del Rep where he is responsible for meetings, research of Latino plays, casting and obtaining directors for the Amigos del REP reading season of Latino plays at the San Diego Rep. John is a native San Diegan who loves his town and the San Diego REP. John has been a member of The REP Board since Oct 2014, and was elected to serve as Board Secretary on January 19th, 2016.
Doug Friedman graduated with a degree in Television Broadcasting from Cal State Northridge, and has been working in the television industry ever since. A former writer on “The Newlywed Game” and “Treasure Hunt,” Doug has worked in Marketing & Promotion for TriStar Television, Stephen J. Cannell Productions, Genesis Entertainment, New World Entertainment and Lionsgate Television on shows such as “Highway to Heaven,” “Hunter,” “21 Jump St.,” “Tales from the Crypt” and “Access Hollywood.” In 2005 Doug moved to San Diego as Director of Creative Services at KUSI NEWS, one of the leading independent television stations in the country. In 2007 he won an Emmy Award for his work, which was added to more than a dozen other honors including PROMAX Gold Medallions, Telly Awards, and a New York Festivals Award. Doug has also been inducted into the Television Academy’s Silver Circle, honoring lifetime achievement in Television.
Dawn Moore had a 21 year career as a software engineer, culminating in her position as a Vice President of Engineering at Qualcomm, managing the Software Engineering department for the Wireless Business Solutions division. Upon moving to San Diego 25 years ago, Dawn discovered its rich theatre community, and the power of theatre to educate and enlighten, seeing over 500 plays since that time, including over 100 plays at San Diego Repertory Theatre. Growing up in the culturally diverse Central Valley of California, Dawn was drawn to The REP's mission of creating multicultural performing arts that speaks of and to our diverse community, and she welcomed the opportunity to join The REP's Board of Trustees in 2004. Dawn has completed the Executive Program for Scientists and Engineers at UCSD, learning management and business skills useful in both the for-profit and non-profit worlds. Dawn continues to feed her own creative spirit, taking classes in performing, writing, and art. She has found dramaturgy to be the perfect outlet for her curious soul, and has served in this capacity for multiple plays. Dawn has been a member of The REP Board since June 2004, and has served as President since July 2011.
San Diego REPertory Theatre is pleased to announce that work is in progress on a $3 million renovation of The Lyceum Theatre, including the lobby, concession, restrooms and Lyceum Stage Theatre. The remodel work will occur in stages. Estimated completion is January 2017.
During construction, San Diego REP patrons will be able to access all normal amenities of The Lyceum Theatre complex. Ample parking will still be available in the Horton Plaza parking garage and the Box Office, elevators, restrooms and concession areas will be easily accessible unless otherwise noted. San Diego REP’s House Management staff will keep patrons updated on renovation activities with signage posted in and around the facility as well as send e-mail communications to maintain the venue experience.
