The New Queer Identity
For most of the 20th century, the word ‘queer’ was used to degrade people who were known or believed to be gay. More recently however, many who identify as LGBT have embraced the Q-word as a self-affirming term. Warwick’s Independent Bookstore presents award-winning author of the recently published, “When We were Outlaws: A Memoir of Love and Revolution.” Jeanne Cordova, journalist and pioneering activist behind the West Coast LGBTQ movement, will share her intimate chronicle. Each of them offers transcendence—and also degradation.” Join Artistic Director Sam Woodhouse for a provocative conversation about the Big Three. Sam’s expert guests are: Roxana Velásquez, executive director of the San Diego Museum of Art; Rev. Arvid Straube, lead minister of First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego; and Goddess Jeanetta - Tantra teacher, sensual healer and touch artist.

This candid discussion features John Alexander, executive director, and Bret Young, managing director of Diversionary Theatre. One of the country’s oldest LGBT theatres, diversionary theatre’s goal is to provide quality theatre that reflects the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities. Downstairs Gallery:
The Art of Julie Warren & Lorraine Iverson
Opening Reception Sunday, February 19, 12:30–1:30pm (prior to the 7pm show)

Julie Warren
is a local painter, printmaker, and graphic designer. She finds inspiration in everything from political plays to sunlight on a blade of a grass. Her work is exhibited locally and held in many private collections. Her works for this play are “Who You Gonna Believe?,” a series of digital illustrations depicting public figures as side show freaks and “The View From Here,” paintings in window-like structures framing a fractured cityscape where different vantage points offer changing views. www.juliewarren.net

Lorraine Iverson’s (aka Rain)
paintings reflect how she views her world - deeply layered - sometimes with dark secrets, sometimes with whimsy. Her solo exhibitions resemble group shows because her body of work seems a bit schizophrenic, as she  never feels compelled to paint the same thing twice. She has been influenced by her teachers, her travels, but mostly her heart.
